The Chapel Hill Black Film Festival takes place on February 10th and 11th, 2023, at The Varsity Theatre, 123 E Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC.

  • Friday, February 10th: 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
  • Saturday, February 11th: 1:00 pm – 10:00 pm

The Chapel Hill Black Film festival was created to explore our history, honor our legacy, and celebrate the excellence that will be our future. This 2023 festival has its eye on the future of North Carolina Film.

It features films by new filmmakers such as current UNC Student Body President Taliajah “Teddy” Vann, ECU graduate writer-director Evan Kidd, and acclaimed veterans such as Erika Alexander (Living Single), Byron Hurt (Hazing), Christopher Everett, and Mike Wiley.

The festival offers unprecedented access to filmmakers as they tell stories of their craft, and how filmmaking is shaping our community. This year the festival will explore stories about reparation in the black community, grief, mental health, fraternity and sorority culture, and freedom.

There will also be live musical performances during the opening night gala.
