The Marian Cheek Jackson Center is being featured for Weaver Street Market’s February Round-Up! The Jackson Center is a hub of creative action dedicated to preserving the future of historically Black neighborhoods in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC. Located in the heart of the Northside community, Center staff work in collaboration with Northside neighbors and friends to respect and to serve histories that, even as they are told, make new history out of Emancipation, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, civil rights struggle, and desegregation. Today Northside, Pine Knolls and Tin Top are among the most racially, ethnically, and economically diverse neighborhoods in the region.
Customers at any of Weaver Street Market’s four locations can round up their bill and donate the change to the Jackson Center. The proceeds will go towards fresh produce and other non-perishable items for our weekly grocery box deliveries that have been supporting 60 households across Northside, Pine Knolls, and Tin Top throughout the pandemic! With this opportunity, they will be able to provide residents with more consistent food options in what they receive in their boxes each week and even offer more customization for people’s boxes, honoring and renewing the unique “client choice” character of the St. Joseph C.M.E. food ministry Heavenly Groceries — a radical model giving people the ability to choose the foods that they want to eat! Honoring the dignity of food recipients by acknowledging people’s dietary restrictions and cultural food practices.
